1. Baywatch

  • Release date: 26 May 2017

  • Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario
The announcement of a modern  movie — based on the original 1989 TV series — would've no doubt caused some raised eyebrows. However, with a cast including Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario, there's every reason to be excited.
Fortunately, it looks like Seth Gordon's film won't take itself too seriously, which could result in an enjoyable journey to the sandy coast of Los Angeles.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

  • Cast: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem
To date, the Piratey adventures of Jack Sparrow and friends have grossed $3.73 billion worldwide, making the franchise one of the most lucrative of all time. Next year's addition to the franchise follows on from 2011's On Stranger Tides, and will see Johnny Depp's Sparrow attempt to defeat his formidable foe, Captain Salazar.

3. The Mummy

  • Release date: 9 June 2017
  • Director: Alex Kurtzman
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis
They don't make films like they used to, which is probably why Hollywood has turned to reboots in recent years. The Mummy is the first film in the modern Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which will include the likes of Frankenstein's monster, Count Dracula and the Wolf Man.
Sofia Boutella will star as , while action aficionado Tom Cruise will star as leading star Tyler Colt.

4. Baby Driver

  • Release date: 28 June 2017
  • Director: Edgar Wright
  • Cast: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm
Edgar Wright's next project focuses on Baby (Ansel Elgort), a young man who also happens to be a getaway driver for hire, working on behalf of criminal bank robbers. The action will also have the director's sprinkle of humor, and Elgort will be supported by big names, including Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.

5. War for the Planet of the Apes

  • Release date: 14 July 2017
  • Director: Matt Reeves
  • Cast: Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer, Andy Serkis
We've been on a streak of upcoming action movies that are either reboots or sequels, and this next addition is no different. The third film in the rebooted franchise follows Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), which was both a financial and a critical success, receiving an Oscar nomination for Visual Effects.

6. The Dark Tower

  • Release date: 4 August 2017
  • Director: Nikolaj Arcel
  • Cast: Katheryn Winnick, Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba
Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey face off in the fantastical, western movie adaptation of Stephen King's much beloved series of novels. As a project that has struggled to make it to the big screen, the final result will be intriguing.
The film will focus on Roland Deschain, the gunslinging protagonist who explores King's make-believe Mid-World during his desperate attempt to reach a mystical tower in an attempt to save his world.

7. The Hitman's Bodyguard

  • Release date: 18 August 2017
  • Director: Patrick Hughes
  • Cast: Salma Hayek, Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson
How does the thought of Ryan Reynolds teaming up with Samuel L. Jackson to defeat Gary Oldman sound? Amazing, right?  tells the story of a bodyguard who enlists the help of a former enemy (surprise, surprise, a hitman) to take on an evil dictator. Daredevil's Élodie Yung and Salma Hayek are also involved in what promises to be a solid mix of action and comedy.
The dramatic footage of a car crashing into the Amsterdam canal became a viral sensation a few months ago, in an act of genius social savvy marketing.

8. Renegades

  • Release date: 1 September 2017
  • Director: Steven Quale
  • Cast: J.K. Simmons, Sullivan Stapleton, Sylvia Hoeks
A little more low-key than some of the blockbusters on the list,  is a French thriller about a team of Navy SEALS who uncover treasure in the depths of war-torn Serbia.
Part of the allure lies with seeing J.K. Simmons kick ass, naturally. The Oscar winner is joined by Blindspot actor Sullivan Stapleton in the leading role.

9. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

  • Release date: 22 September 2017
  • Director: Matthew Vaughn
  • Cast: Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong
Following on from 2014's Kingsman: The Secret Service, the sequel focuses on the trio of Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, Roxanne "Roxy" Morton and Merlin as they head to the United States after the destruction of the Kingsman HQ.

10. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

  • Release date: December 20, 2017
  • Director: Jake Kasdan
  • Cast: Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Bobby Cannavale
The trend is going strong, with a remake of  next up. Although the original, starring the late, great Robin Williams seems untouchable, there is hope for Jake Kasdan's movie. Namely, the endlessly affable Dwayne Johnson in the lead role.
The film is dedicated to Williams, and will pick up from events that in that film, instead of a like-for-like update. Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas also star.

11. The Commuter

  • Release date: 12 January 2018
  • Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
  • Cast: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson
The Americans and the Brits unite to bring this action offering, with Hollywood hard-man Liam Neeson in the lead role. Neeson plays an insurance salesman who, while on the way home from work, is unwittingly given a life-or-death task by a stranger: Identify a hidden passenger before the last stop.
Expect tense thrills against the clock, as Neeson channels his best Keanu Reeves in Speed impression. Vera Farmiga, Sam Neill and Jonathan Banks help beef out the rest of the impressive cast.

12. World War Z 2

  • Release date: TBA
  • Director: David Fincher (rumored)
  • Cast: Brad Pitt
Based on the novel of the same name, the original 2013's World War Z focused on an apocalyptic zombie invasion, and the efforts of UN investigator Gerry Lane to help prevent the disaster.
Despite the approaching release date, not much is known about the new action movie. The film will have box office sway in the form of Pitt, who will again star, while David Fincher is rumored to be directing.
